Tree Armor -- Guards Should Not be a Nest for Moles and Rodents.

April 22, 2020

Trees have many enemies in nature. Ice, wind, snow and hot, dry weather are things we cannot control. Many people purchase tree guards for protection from deer rubbing. Unfortunately trees have other enemies in nature beside buck. And if you didn’t buy the right tree guard, you could lose your trees to rodents and moles.

Many tree guards, like tree tubes and storm water pipe leave plenty of room for small animals to make a home for themselves in the winter. They are attracted to the sugar in the bark as well as the second later known as the Phloem. This layer serves as the pipeline through which food is passed. When this second layer is damaged or chewed thru by a mouse, rat or mole, the tree can die. Insects build nests between the tube and the bark, sapping the life our of the bark over the winter.

That’s why it’s important to buy a tree protector or tree wrap that “hugs” the tree from near grade and up. Tree Armor is a spring loaded wrap that is formed in a tapered spiral. Recognizing that a tree trunk is wider at the bottom than it is near the top, engineers designed Tree Armor to have a wider shape on one end and narrower on the other. As you unwind Tree Armor, it fits snugly, keeping out rodents, moles and other vermin.

When buying a tree guard, make sure it’s made in the USA. Products made overseas do not have to conform to strict EPA guidelines that insist the material used is made of virgin vinyl. Heavy metals like cadmium and lead are integrated and hidden, many times, in imported vinyl. They are used in overseas manufacturing because they are less expensive. Unfortunately, the heavy metals can leech out of the plastic and drip into the root system of your trees.

Tree Armor uses only EPA approved virgin vinyl to make its tree guards. This makes the tree protector a little more expensive, but it gives the farmer and homeowner the peace of mind they are contributing to clean soil.
